June 2021 Newsletter

Dear Archaeology Friends,

Happy summer 2021 to you all!  It gives me great pleasure to write you all with some exciting updates from the Society.  First, please take a look at our website.  In particular, here on the post about our last talk of this year, from Dr. Brenda Baker, you will find the recording on AIA’s YouTube site.  Thanks again to Dr. Baker and the AIA!

We are so excited that we had over 150 registrants for this talk.  Given that all our programming was virtual this past year, the silver lining was that many more participants could zoom in, and through our social media campaign, we were able to reach a wider audience.  Welcome to all of you that are new to our society! We hope those of you that are far from Staten Island will continue to zoom and take part in our coming year’s program. Which brings me to my second exciting update:

Our programming for this coming year is shaping up nicely and looks to be both in-person and virtual.  Those of you who prefer to come in-person will be invited to do so, and those who want to zoom will be able to take part virtually in real time.  Details about this ‘hybrid’ modality will come along in September as we have all the details in place.

Another update will come to you by early August.  At that time you will see the full schedule of all our events for the year.  In the meantime, here is a preview of the events we are planning:

  • September talk at Wagner College with Robert Koehl on Minoan Athletics
  • October AIA at Wagner College talk with Michael Chazan on Wonderwerk Cave (Kalahari)
  • Early Winter Biblical Archaeology Event with JCC
  • February talk at Noble Maritime Museum with Bridget Buxton on the Titanic
  • March talk at Staten Island Museum on Natural History Exhibits
  • Spring trip into Manhattan to view special exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Late Antique) and the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (Roman Wall Painting)
  • April AIA talk with Anthony Barbieri at Wagner College on Egyptian and Chinese funerary traditions

Please consider joining the society (see details below) now in order to take part in programming for next year.  And also encourage participation among your friends and family by having them sign up for our newsletters.

Have a great summer, and stay tuned!

-Sarah J. Scott, President
